  • The Belgian coast, 1925

    The Belgian coast, 1925

The Belgian coast with its sandy beaches is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe. Generations of families from Belgium and abroad have spent their annual summer holidays in one of the seaside resorts. The Belgian coast also became an obvious destination for open-air schools and free holiday camps, as for these kids from the official school in St. Amandsberg near Ghent in 1925.

    On the Gileppe Dam, 1930s

The Gileppe Dam in the province of Liège was for a long time one of the handful of spots in Belgium you had to see at least once in your life. The first of its kind in the country, the solid arch-gravity dam surmounted by the Belgian lion looking defiantly towards neighbouring Germany, was inaugurated in 1878.

    Dinant, 1934

A visit to the city of Dinant and especially its citadel, surmounting the river Meuse, was another favourite destination for daytrips, as for this Liberal Women's group from Wetteren.

  • Dolmen of Wéris, 1959

    Dolmen of Wéris, 1959

The dolmen of Wéris, cut from the local puddingstone, is with its 5,000 years the oldest man-made structure in Belgium. After its acquisition by the Belgian state in 1882, the ancient tomb was restored and surrounded by a fence for protection. The fence was removed in the 1990s but can still be seen on this 1959 photo.
